breaking the spirit
warning: slight movie spoiler ahead.
"water" was the first of the 2 movies tt i watched with ben last night. it was an indian movie about the lives of indian widows living in india under the old traditions, whereby widows were little better than the untouchables in the caste system and basically led lives of poverty and pointless suffering, till they died.
it was a slow and depressing movie. you watched as they lived day to day, day by day, with no goal except to look forward to death and a better afterlife - i.e. to be reborn as a man. it was as if they had no personal choice, no free will in any matter. their lives had been predetermined, from their match-made marriages to men some had never even met, all the way to their deaths.
but it wasn't tt bad. oh no. the lead character was a 7 year old chuyia. and although she was young, she was spirited and fiesty. she didn't believe tt her parents had given her up to live with widows, and she just kept on fighting her fate, doing what she wanted against all the odds, finding little sparks of happiness and colour in an otherwise dull drab world.
she befriended this beautiful widow who was being courted by a handsome rich young man - as per the fairy tales, but like all sad depressing movies, there was no fairy tale ending. the widow drowned herself.
but tt wasn't the part of the show tt killed me. chuyia took tt in her stride. she was angered and saddened by death, and she was definitely quite crushed by it, but she refused to accept tt her fate would be such.
except tt after tt, her spirit was broken.
and i wish they didn't put tt scene in. i knew it was going to happen at some point in time or other, but i really wish it wouldn't. whatever was left to the imagination was sheer cruelty, and it made me sick to my stomach. i try not to get too emotionally tangled up with 2-dimensional characters on a screen 10 feet away, but at this time i failed. i felt the anger, the bitterness, and the sadness and revulsion, all at once, and the taste stayed in my mouth for hours after.
you can't do tt. you just can't. and maybe at the end of the movie, there was hope. she did leave the godforsaken place she was in for hopefully, somewhere better. but even tho... her spirit had been broken. maybe it might have healed with time, but these kind of scars... they never go away. they're the souvenirs tt you never lose. they're the demons tt haunt you in your dreams for the years to follow.
i think tt to break the spirit is far worse than to break the body, or even the life. for tt reason, i think tt rape can be considered a more heinous crime than assault or even say, murder. especially if the rape is of a paedophilic, or even worse, an incestuous nature.
it breaks the spirit. especially if you're just a child and you're innocent and you have the whole world and all your dreams before you. if you've given your trust and love to someone as your protector and provider, only to have it betrayed in the worst possible way.
when it comes to interviewing suspects, i believe tt there should be a measure of restraint exercised by police officers. they should not overstep their boundaries or cause unnecessary distress. however, i also think tt if i were to subscribe to this theory, i would have to steer clear of rape cases. because i would probably be tempted to stamp my foot on the aforesaid person's balls if i were ever to him.
i cannot say tt i can be impartial in such a matter. to me, rape is utterly heinous. it's not a feminist argument. to me it's just one of the worst and most bestial things tt you can do. for the satisfaction of base animalistic urges and for the assertion of your own power over someone weaker than you. nothing justifies tt, in my opinion.
many people have asked me what kind of punishment i would like to see for convicted rapists. many have advocated castration. some even the death penalty. me? when it comes to rape, i believe in mainly retributive punishment. sure, there might be a deterrent or utilitarian argument to the sentencing, but for the most part i want to see punishements proportional to the crime.
i had been considering this issue for some time, but after tonight (and with some inspiration from nip/tuck), i've come up with what i consider the most suitable punishment for rapists. the prisons should install a fucking machine tt literally, pumps this fake metal or plastic dildo, and convicted rapists should all be given a taste of their own medicine.
mainly, tt they should all take it in the ass.
forget caning, forget death penalties and the such. they wanna fuck so much, let them feel how it's like to be fucked. and i guess size (and speed) should vary according to the propensity of the crime. the more heinous, the bigger the damn contraption. i.e. paedophiles and incestous criminals should get it bigger, and if you're both, you should get fucked with a foot-long.
graphic i know. but what can i say? i'm terribly biased when it comes to things like this. only thing is i don't believe this suggestion will ever go through because it's way too politically incorrect.
but there's a thought. if you break someone's spirit for the sake of your own urges and power hunger, there's no reason why your own fucking spirit should be broken with a taste of your own medicine.
and you know what? i think tt if this sentencing were even to be implemented... the rate of rapes in the countries tt implement this... will fall DRASTICALLY.
